Quite a few garage doors come with manual locks, especially older models, for added security for your house. These typically look like a knob or handle in the middle of your door with two bars running horizontally from each side. There may be a small button on the top or side of the handle that you can press to slide the bars across the doors, thus locking the garage door from the inside. It can be somewhat easy to accidentally hit that button, especially if you’re getting large objects out of the trunk of your car near the door.
Thanks for asking for our input. I have enjoyed the 'Future House' episodes that you folks have created. And, I think that the amount of segments-per-season seems just about right - any more and it might begin to take the shows into an area that moves away from their core meaning (i.e. - home repair/rehab/construction, etc). Though, it's easy to understand how new and upcoming technologies fit well into TOH/ATOH's overall picture. Also, Ross Trethewey is a good sement host - very knoledgable and enthusiastic - and, as well, he gives the TOH/ATOH audience some 'younger blood' to continue forward with the show's traditions. My thoughts are to stick with 'Future House' segments. And, thanks for all of the good work you folks do in continuing to present to us each year such wonderful productions as TOH and ATOH, which we get to enjoy and benefit so greatly from!

In most cases, only one spring breaks or wears out at a time, and you can get away with replacing just the failed spring. But this is a little like replacing old car tires one at a time. You'll get the best performance if all the springs are new and have the same strength. Extension springs are replaced individually, making it more tempting to replace just one. With torsion springs, you have to disassemble everything to replace either spring, so it makes sense to swap out both springs during the repair.
I purchased a garage door and opener and had HD install it. It was around $3600 and when the price increased by about $800 I called right away to pay it with no delay (these are all estimates written from memory). Anyway, I I bought the garage so that the front of the house would be prettier and it is but the old garage worked fine and I donât even have a car in it so I donât open and close it all and it actually only gets opened 2-3 times a month when a friend who stores their car there uses it. However, soon after the garage was installed, this friend told me the garage was working intermittently. When I called HD to come look at it, they said I would have to pay around $85 to have it looked at which didnât make sense to me since it was brand new and almost immediately not working so it was likely a problem with the product or installation. HD would not provide immediate assistance to fix the problem, they insisted other steps which were unreasonable given it was a new garage and this request added great difficulty for me. Five months later after this back and forth calling to have someone from HD to just come and fix it, I went into the Huntington Beach store, spoke with Ryan who was polite and with little to say, he said Iâll put you on the list for an appointment and they will call in 24-48 to book a day and time. I was thankful. I also expressed my concern that I would not be charged for this visit and he said no unless it wasnât covered under warranty. Two days later the installer called and said it will cost to around $95 just to show up. They arrived later that week, charged $95 and fixed the problem with no additional fee. If the garage was being used the way most garages are used and it was out of warranty, I could understand for a fee to cone out and look at it but because it stopped working almost Immediately and all the fuss and delay to have it fixed by HD was disappointing. When you gave me a quote then raised it by 20%% I paid immediately and without hesitation but this service was not reciprocated. I may have multiple projects at multiple sites but even if that werenât the case, I would hope you would keep up your good costumer service history otherwise, your competitors willl slowly be better. Kindly return the fee charged for this service. Read less

It is very important that the replacement springs are calibrated for the weight of your door. Using the wrong size garage door springs will caused the to not function properly and could also cause the opener to break much quicker. Replacing extension springs can be very dangerous and if done wrong can harm someone using the garage door. Make sure you call the Garage Door Doctor to ensure your garage is repaired properly!
While it would be wonderful if door springs lasted forever, the reality is that the simple act of opening and shutting the door multiple times every day isn’t easy. It’s hard on the springs, even though they’re built to do it. Most springs will last for a while, but they won’t last forever. The regular wear and tear of endlessly opening and shutting the door breaks them down and eventually, they’ll need to be replaced.
When you hire a professional, the first thing they will do is turn off the power as a safety precaution. They will then measure the existing door springs to make sure the new springs they order or have in stock fit accordingly. With these new springs, they will unwind the existing springs and install the new ones in its place, tightening them with screws. When tightened, the springs will be balanced, lubricated and the springs will be wound up. Lastly, the door will be tested and the tracks will be lubricated to move efficiently.
The tricky parts of the job involve you carrying the tension of the spring. Replacing a spring requires that you first unwind the spring to relieve the tension, then wind it back up and secure it while it's under tension. Winding bars are used for all winding and unwinding actions—don't try to save a few bucks by substituting long screwdrivers or pieces of rebar for the real winding bars. Substitute tools are much more likely to slip, or they may bend or break under the load of the spring.
If your door feels heavy, it is likely that your springs have started to wear down and are no longer capable of bearing the weight that they once did. Now, don’t worry, just because a spring is starting to lose its strength doesn’t mean it will snap at any moment. However, simultaneously, a weak spring isn’t any safer to try and repair on your own.
If your garage door's spring breaks, stops working properly, or snaps, you'll lose the ability to open and close your garage door. This could happen due to a variety of issues, like normal wear and tear or from extreme temperature changes in a short amount of time. Spring replacements require a quick response from a garage door provider near you. Contact The Home Depot and a local, background-checked technician will respond within 24 hours.

Garage doors are able to move due to a counterbalance system that usually consists of a torsion spring. We often find incorrect springs have been installed which result in an unsafe door that you may not be able to open manually when needed. The balance of your garage door should be tested annually to reduce wear on your garage door opener and ensure it can be opened if an emergency situation arises. Because of the dangers involved with torsion springs, garage door spring repair and installation should only be done by experienced professionals like our Medics.
In addition to the bodily risk involved, it’s simply not an easy task. There’s the possibility that you will not install it correctly. At worst, this creates the risk that the mechanism will fail at the wrong time and injure you or someone in your family. At best, this means it will malfunction, and you’ll have to call professionals to fix it. It will save time, money and potential heartache to simply call a professional to install your new door springs correctly the first time.
Homeowners have long been warned that torsion springs are extremely dangerous to work with and that replacing them must be left to a professional. But these claims are somewhat exaggerated. If you understand how they work, and you pay attention to what you're doing, you can replace them safely and surprisingly easily. Granted, they're a little spooky to work with at first (partly due to their reputation), but this is a good thing—you really don't want to forget that they're under tension. Thinking about every step — before you take it — is the key to staying safe.

It you have a tilt-up door, you are looking at a $150 – $200 repair or replacement. If it’s a roll-up door it’s going to cost you more. Roll-up door spring repair or replacement is usually around $200 – $250 for a 2 car door. If the brackets need to be disassembled to remove the springs due to the shaft not sliding sideways enough it will cost you an additional $50 – $100.
Springs are one of the primary components in all garage door systems. Torsion springs are usually mounted horizontally over the door opening. As the door closes, cables add tension to the springs and as the door opens that tension is released. The opening of the door causes the springs to unwind in conjunction with the weight coming off the door. This achieves a natural buoyancy. However, as the door moves up and down over time and the cycle count rises, the steel in the torsion springs will grow weak and will no longer be able to create energy or lift your garage door.
Center and level the first section after you install the brackets. The door must be level even if the floor isn’t, so use shims under the section to level it. The rubber gasket on the bottom section will fill the gaps created by an unlevel floor. To hold the level in place, tape it to the section. To hold the section in place, lightly toenail a 16d nail into the frame and bend it over the section. Add brackets and rollers before setting them in place and stack one section on top of another, toenailing as you go up.
